The Sagrada Familia welcomes more than 4.5 million visitors each year, making it the most visited place in all of Barcelona and one of the most visited in Spain, along with the Alhambra and the Prado Museum.
The Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family, or simply the Holy Family, is a Catholic basilica whose construction began in 1882, still unfinished today. This temple is considered the most important work of the famous architect Antonio Gaudí and the greatest exponent of Catalan modernist architecture.
It is the second most visited church in the world and, after its completion, it will also become the tallest Christian church in the world, reaching 172.5 meters in height with its central tower. The Sagrada Familia has three impressive façades dedicated to the three stages of Christ's life: the Birth, the Passion, and the Glory.
Despite being his most famous work, the construction of the Sagrada Familia does not begin with Gaudí but with Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano, another architect of the same time. The first stone of the temple was laid on the day of San José (March 19) 1882; Gaudí attended the ceremony together with Villar since Gaudí had been his assistant several times.
The works, however, did not begin until more than a year later, on August 25, 1883. Villar decided to give up the project not much later, which was offered to the architect Joan Martorell. He rejected the offer, culminating in the young Gaudí, only 31 years old, remaining in charge of the Sagrada Familia.
Since then, Gaudí devoted himself intensely to the temple, the last 15 years of his life doing it exclusively. Unfortunately for Gaudí, the works would extend far beyond his death in 1926. The direction of the work has passed through many hands since then, but Antonio Gaudí's vision remains.
