Malaga is one of the main tourist destinations in Spain all year round thanks to its pleasant climate, perfect for enjoying its beaches in the summer months. However, there is much more to see during the rest of the year, because it is a place that has monuments, museums, streets and squares full of history and culture, which are surely worth visiting.
As one of the oldest cities in Europe, when you visit its historical centre you will pass through the ruins and buildings of numerous towns, including those formed by Romans, Muslims and Christians. The oldest and most recently discovered monument is the Roman Theatre, where you can visit the centre of classical interpretation and all its parts while discovering the customs and life of the time. From there you can have a look at Mount Gibralfaro, dominated by the castle of the same name, from which you can enjoy the best views of Malaga.
Next to the Alcazaba, this castle stood by as it watched the Arab conquer the city and help it prosper into a flourishing city. Eventually, it became the capital of the Hammudi taifa, as well as three other ephemeral kingdoms later.
The most majestic building in the city is undoubtedly the Cathedral, known as "La Manquita" because it was inaugurated without the construction of its southern tower; it was built on the remains of the mosque after the reconquest of Malaga by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487. The churches and convents built under the Castilian influence began to bring together the population, giving rise to the formation of new neighborhoods such as La Trinidador Capuchinos.
Malaga is also the birthplace of the painter Pablo Picasso, and in front of his birthplace, which is now the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation, we find a bronze statue dedicated to him that portrays him sitting on a marble bench, with a notebook in his left hand and a pencil in his right.
