Madrid, the capital of Spain, brings together high multicultural and artistic contrasts on its streets. The Arabs refer to it as "Magerit", meaning land rich in water. The central and bustling Puerta del Sol is one of Madrid's emblems. Its name comes from the fact that the gate was located at the entrance to the city, next to the road that led to Alcalá de Henares.
Another great emblematic symbol of the capital is the Cibeles Fountain. This fountain represents the Roman goddess Cibeles, symbol of the earth, agriculture and fertility. This is also an icon of the fans of the Real Madrid football team, as it is here that their sporting triumphs are celebrated.
The Royal Palace, home to various Spanish kings, has witnessed the monarchical history of Spain. The building, with more than 3,000 rooms, is inspired by the sketches made by Bernini for the construction of the Louvre in Paris.
Madrid also has a green lung in the city centre: El Retiro Park. With over 125 hectares and more than 15,000 trees, this park is a green conglomerate full of gardens and other architectural works of great importance.
Not far from this cosmopolitan jungle is the art walk, formed by the most important museums of the city: El Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen.
